Johns Hopkins North and South Power Plants and Medical Campus
FES completely automated the Johns Hopkins Hospital South and North Power Plant. The scope of this project included the largest self-generating chilled water and medium pressure steam plant on the east coast. The South Portion of the Plant consists of (6) 3,500-ton Centrifugal Machines, and the North Plant consists of (3) 2,700-ton Chillers, (6) 1,500-ton Chillers, and (5) 3,000-ton machines, totaling 53,100 tons of cooling under control. FES collaborated with the Mechanical and Electrical Engineers Group to devise intricate control strategies, enabling multiple Plants to operate in fully automatic mode. This system allows the equipment’s cooling load to be calculated through BTU metering across multiple locations or manually adjusted via the BAS system’s graphic operator interface. Furthermore, FES has precise control over numerous isolation valves:
- Chiller loading /unloading
- Primary Chilled Water pumps
- Secondary Chilled Water Pumps
- Chilled Water Conditioning
- Condenser Water Pumps
- Cooling Towers
- Condenser Water Filtration (water for open loop systems, and heat exchanger controls on closed loop systems)
FES performed multiple complex integrations to third-party equipment, including hardwiring controls through the Chiller Packages, High and Low Voltage Variable Frequency Drives, and Smart Meters that vary from vortex shedding, turbine, electromagnetic, and ultrasonic styles. FES also controls and monitors the generators that provide backup power to the plant. The controls and sequences implemented by FES are recognized as the most sophisticated and complex in the industry.
Kaiser Permanente South Nova Hub & Parking Garage
Facility Engineering Services (FES) was entrusted with providing the Building Automation System (BAS) for a state-of-the-art, 263,000 square foot full-service outpatient medical HUB and an accompanying 1100-space parking garage.
